ABIGAIL

Nothing was going as planned. The perfect picture I’d created in my mind had blown up, but the truth was, I didn’t know how to feel about it all. On one hand, I was worried because I knew Maurice was angry.

No, angry wasn’t a strong enough word.

He was livid, pissed all the way off – and he had every right to be. He’d been very clear about his plans from the beginning, and somehow, I’d managed to screw everything up with happily ever after fairytales and crazy hoop dreams. I was trying to make up for the past. I was trying to prove to Maurice that, despite the way my parents had felt about him, he’d always been enough for me. But not just me, he was enough for our son as well.

Thinking about those things made me feel warm on the inside. The look on Mari’s face when he’d gotten to the car after him and his father had gone inside the mall… there was a spark in his eyes and a pep in his step. And when he said they’d had a ‘good talk’ inside of the mall, I wanted to burst into a million bubbles of excitement.

That was all I’d ever wanted for our son. From the time he was a little boy, I’d dreamed of him having his father to look up to, and that part was going exactly the way I’d imagined it would. They were connecting as father and son. Maurice had defended him at the bridge and even in the car when I’d tried to come down on him. It had been natural; but what would happen now that Mari was going to be in Medellín with us? What would happen when he figured out that his father was a cold-hearted killer whose moniker was Dread?

The questions, which had no answers, chilled my insides.

The private jet was fabulous, a far cry from the commercial and occasional first-class seats I’d sat in before. When we passed through security, not one agent batted an eyelid and I secretly wondered if they’d been told not to. Now that we were on the jet, I was being swallowed by plush, leather seats and flipping through channels on a seventy-inch smart tv, and a stewardess presented us with an elaborate menu that could have rivaled that of any five-star restaurant.

“Order whatever you want,” Maurice instructed us. “I’m going to the boardroom to make a few calls.”

“Boardroom? Are you serious?” Mari couldn’t keep the shock off his face or fascination out of his voice.

“Yeah, there are two of them, but I’m using the small one.” Maurice paused and glared at the two of us. “Both of you, stay your asses here,” he warned. “Relax and put your feet up. It’s gonna be a long flight.”

We nodded.

Maurice shook his head, like he didn’t know what he was going to do with us, and disappeared into another cabin.

I chewed the inside of my lip as the questions I’d been ruminating over rushed into my head yet again.
